View companyA guide to defense technology careers in India — covering roles in RF systems, signal processing, embedded systems, FPGA, and electronic warfare at India's private defense companies and DRDO labs.
India’s defence sector is undergoing a structural transformation. The government’s push to reduce import dependence — through the Indigenisation Lists (negative import lists) and the 25% FDI route — is driving private companies to build defence electronics, missile systems, drones, radar, and communications equipment domestically. Alongside DRDO and the Defence PSUs (HAL, BEL, BHEL, BDL), a new generation of private defence technology companies is hiring engineers and researchers.
Companies like Astra Microwave, Bharat Forge Defence, Alpha Design Technologies, DCM Shriram (DCM Hyundai), Sagar Defence Engineering, and ideaForge are building radar systems, electronic warfare suites, naval weapons, and UAVs in India. The iDEX (Innovations for Defence Excellence) framework has created a pathway for startups to develop and sell to the armed forces. The drone sector — for surveillance, logistics, and precision strike applications — is particularly active and growing at pace.
RF & Microwave Engineer — Design radar systems, electronic warfare equipment, communication links, and antenna arrays. Work on phased array beamforming, low-noise amplifier design, signal integrity, and RF system integration. Strong background in electromagnetics and RF circuit design.
Signal Processing Engineer — Develop real-time DSP algorithms for radar detection, target tracking, electronic intelligence (ELINT), and communications. Implement on DSPs, FPGAs, or GPUs using C++, MATLAB, and VHDL/Verilog.
FPGA Engineer — Implement high-speed signal processing pipelines, sensor interfaces, and communication protocols on Xilinx/Intel FPGAs. Defence applications require ruggedisation and often military-grade component qualification.
Embedded Systems / Real-Time Engineer — Write firmware for mission computers, weapon interface units, and avionics subsystems. RTOS programming (VxWorks, Integrity, or bare-metal), DO-178C software processes, and interface to MIL-STD buses (MIL-STD-1553, ARINC 429).
Systems Engineer — Define system architecture, write requirement specifications, manage interface control documents, and conduct trade studies. Works across hardware, software, and test teams. Model-based systems engineering (MBSE) with tools like DOORS and Capella.
UAV / Drone Engineer — Build unmanned aerial systems for ISR, logistics, or combat applications. Covers airframe design, flight controller development (PX4, ArduPilot, or custom), payload integration, and ground control systems.
Structural / Mechanical Engineer — Design and analyse airframe structures, weapon housings, and launcher systems for military-grade environments. MIL-SPEC qualification, shock and vibration analysis, and structural testing are core activities.
Defence technology roles often require Indian citizenship and, for sensitive projects, security clearance eligibility. Companies look for engineers with domain depth — an RF engineer who has worked on real radar hardware, or an embedded engineer with RTOS and safety-critical software experience. DRDO recruitment is through CEPTAM and RAC examinations. Private defence companies increasingly recruit from aerospace and electronics engineering departments at IITs, NITs, and DIAT (Defence Institute of Advanced Technology). Security clearances are typically processed after joining and can take several months.
