India opened commercial drone airspace in earnest with the Drone Rules 2021 and the UAS Traffic Management (UTM) framework that followed. The role is maturing from a hobbyist niche into a regulated profession with structured licences, growing salary bands, and multiple verticals to specialise in.

The Opportunity

India has over 140 million hectares of arable land — precision agriculture alone creates a structural demand for thousands of licensed operators to carry out pesticide spraying, crop health surveys, and yield mapping missions. The Ministry of Civil Aviation’s Digi Yatra-linked UTM ecosystem now manages commercial drone corridors, and the Defence Ministry’s positive indigenisation list has driven procurement of domestic ISR UAVs from companies like ideaForge and Okulo Aerospace. Garuda Aerospace operates one of the largest commercial drone fleets in the country, with pilots deployed across agriculture and infrastructure verticals. The DGCA Licence Pathway

Operating a drone commercially in India requires a Remote Pilot Certificate (RPC) issued by DGCA. The path depends on the drone category:

• Small category (250 g – 2 kg): RPC via authorised Remote Pilot Training Organisation (RPTO), written exam, and simulator/practical assessment.
• Medium/Large category (2 kg – 150 kg+): Additional ground school hours, medical fitness, and a practical flight test at an RPTO.

For defence and paramilitary operations, DGCA rules are supplemented by internal service standards. Survey & Mapping Pilot — Operate fixed-wing or multi-rotor platforms equipped with RGB, multispectral, or LiDAR payloads for topographic mapping, construction progress tracking, and land records. Requires understanding of ground control points, photogrammetry software (Pix4D, DJI Terra, Agisoft Metashape), and mission planning tools.

Infrastructure Inspection Pilot — Fly close-proximity inspection missions on power transmission lines, wind turbines, solar farms, pipelines, and bridges. IG Defence and Tardid Technologies operate in this space for industrial structural health monitoring. Requires competency in manual precision flight, payload gimbal control, and report generation.

Flight Test & V&V Pilot — Work embedded within a drone manufacturer’s engineering team to expand flight envelopes, validate autopilot software releases, and characterise hardware. • Mission planning: Proficiency with tools like QGroundControl, Mission Planner, or proprietary GCS software is expected for survey and ISR roles.
