India’s robotics and automation sector is being built on two distinct tracks. The first is industrial automation — driven by manufacturers looking to compete globally, adopting robotic welding, assembly, and material handling lines. The second is the deep-tech wave: startups building autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), surgical robotics platforms, agricultural robots, warehouse automation systems, and drone-based inspection solutions.

The Opportunity

Companies like GreyOrange, Addverb Technologies, Systemantics, Niqo Robotics, and Asimov Robotics are scaling rapidly and hiring across robotics software, embedded systems, and mechanical engineering. The “Make in India” push in manufacturing is accelerating adoption of industrial robots, with integrators and OEMs both hiring. Meanwhile, defence and agriculture applications are creating demand for autonomous systems engineers with expertise in navigation and perception.

Career Paths

Robotics Software Engineer — Build software stacks using ROS/ROS2 for robot navigation, manipulation, and coordination. Write nodes for perception, planning, and control. Work with real hardware in the loop and on simulation platforms like Gazebo and Isaac Sim.

Motion Planning Engineer — Develop algorithms for path planning, trajectory optimisation, and collision avoidance. Covers classical methods (A*, RRT) and learning-based approaches. Strong mathematics background (linear algebra, optimisation) is essential.

Computer Vision Engineer — Build perception pipelines for object detection, pose estimation, depth sensing, and scene understanding using cameras, LiDAR, and radar. OpenCV, PyTorch, and CUDA are standard tools.

Embedded Systems / Firmware Engineer — Write low-level firmware for motor controllers, sensor interfaces, and communication buses (CAN, SPI, I2C, Ethernet). RTOS programming, ARM Cortex-M development, and real-time constraints are core.

Mechanical Design Engineer — Design robot linkages, end-effectors, chassis, and enclosures using SolidWorks or CATIA. Work through DFM, tolerance analysis, and prototype builds. Hands-on with manufacturing processes.

Controls Engineer — Design and tune PID, model predictive, and adaptive controllers for robot joints and vehicle dynamics. MATLAB/Simulink modelling with C++ implementation on embedded targets.

What Hiring Looks Like

Robotics companies in India seek engineers who bridge domains — a firmware engineer who can also read a schematic, or a software engineer who understands kinematic constraints. ROS2 experience is increasingly the baseline expectation for software roles. For embedded positions, demonstrated project work (hobbyist builds, academic robots, competition teams) carries real weight alongside formal qualifications. Most companies are headquartered in Bengaluru, Pune, and Hyderabad, with manufacturing facilities increasingly outside these metros.
