View companyA guide to space and aerospace careers in India — covering roles in GNC, propulsion, ADCS, satellite systems, remote sensing, and avionics at ISRO-ecosystem companies and NewSpace startups.
India’s space sector is experiencing a generational opening. The 2023 liberalisation that allows private companies to build and launch rockets and satellites has triggered a wave of startups — Agnikul Cosmos, Skyroot Aerospace, Pixxel, Dhruva Space, GalaxEye, and dozens more — hiring engineers who until recently had to go to ISRO or abroad to work on spacecraft.
ISRO remains the anchor — the organisation that built Chandrayaan, Mangalyaan, and Aditya-L1 continues to hire engineers and scientists every year. But the real growth is in the private ecosystem. NewSpace India Limited (NSIL) is commercialising ISRO’s launch vehicles, while startups are racing to put up communications constellations, Earth observation satellites, and in-space propulsion systems. The downstream market — satellite data analytics, geospatial intelligence, and precision agriculture — is also creating demand for engineers and data scientists who can work with space-derived data.
GNC Engineer — Design guidance, navigation, and control algorithms for launch vehicles and satellites. This covers flight mechanics, autopilot design, sensor fusion (IMU, GPS, star trackers), and Kalman filtering. MATLAB and Simulink are core tools.
Propulsion Engineer — Work on liquid, solid, or hybrid rocket engines. Roles span combustion analysis, turbopump design, nozzle optimisation, and test stand operations. Hands-on with pressure systems and cryogenic propellants.
ADCS Engineer — Design attitude determination and control systems using reaction wheels, magnetorquers, and star sensors. Strong overlap with control systems and embedded software.
Structures & Thermal Engineer — Perform structural analysis (FEA with NASTRAN or Abaqus) and thermal modelling (Thermica, ESATAN) to ensure spacecraft survive the launch and on-orbit environment.
RF & Antenna Engineer — Design communication subsystems, antennas, and ground station links. Covers link budget analysis, phased array design, and RF hardware integration.
Remote Sensing / Geospatial Analyst — Work with satellite imagery (SAR, EO/IR, multispectral) to build data products for agriculture, urban planning, defence, and disaster management. Python, GDAL, and GIS tools are standard.
Avionics / Embedded Systems Engineer — Develop flight computer software, RTOS-based firmware for satellite subsystems, and on-board data handling systems. Safety-critical software development with DO-178C awareness.
Aerospace startups in India typically hire engineers with 1–5 years of experience who are comfortable wearing multiple hats — a structures engineer who can also run thermal analysis, or an embedded engineer who understands the space environment. Master’s degrees in aerospace, mechanical, or electronics engineering are common, but strong undergraduates with demonstrable project experience (rocketry clubs, SEDS chapters, SAE Aero Design) are increasingly competitive. ISRO recruitment goes through ICRB and campus placements at IITs and NITs.
