Apply on Astrogate Labs

Astrogate Labs is a space-technology start-up based in Bengaluru, building core technologies in laser communication terminals and networks for small-satellites. Astrogate Labs aims to simplify, reduce cost of communication, and enable satellites send more data to ground. We have developed one of the world's smallest space-qualified laser communication terminals and are scaling up our flight hardware production and expanding our optical engineering capabilities.

We are seeking an Optics Design & Test Engineer II to join our core optical engineering team. In this role, you will be responsible for the design, simulation, assembly, alignment, and testing of free-space optical communication payloads and sub-systems for space applications.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, optimize, and tolerance optical components and assemblies (lens systems, telescopes, fiber optics, laser diodes) using Zemax OpticStudio or Code V.
  • Design and develop test setups for optical characterization, wavefront sensing, beam profiling, and environmental qualification (thermal-vacuum, vibration).
  • Perform rigorous optical alignment, integration, and testing (AIT) of complex free-space optical payloads in cleanroom environments.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electronics, and systems engineering teams to ensure seamless payload integration.
  • Document optical designs, analysis reports, assembly procedures, and test plans meeting space-grade standards (ECSS or NASA).

Requirements:

  • B.Tech/M.Tech/Ph.D. in Optics, Photonics, Applied Physics, or related engineering discipline.
  • 3-5 years of hands-on industry experience in optical design, free-space optics, or laser systems.
  • Proficiency in optical design software such as Zemax OpticStudio.
  • Demonstrated experience in optical lab setup, alignment, and characterization using instruments like power meters, beam profilers, wavefront sensors, and spectrometers.
  • Familiarity with optomechanical design principles and tolerancing.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work in a fast-paced start-up environment.
