View companyA guide to semiconductor and chip design careers in India — covering VLSI, RTL design, physical design, verification, and analog engineering roles at India's growing fabless ecosystem.
India has quietly become one of the world’s most important hubs for semiconductor design. While fabs are concentrated in Taiwan and South Korea, the engineering talent powering chip design increasingly lives in Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Pune, and Chennai. Global semiconductor companies — Intel, Qualcomm, Texas Instruments, MediaTek — run large R&D centres here, and a new generation of Indian fabless startups is building silicon for AI accelerators, automotive SoCs, and wireless connectivity.
The Indian government’s ₹76,000 crore semiconductor incentive scheme is driving a structural shift. Companies are setting up design centres, and startups like InCore Semiconductors, Mindgrove Technologies, and Saankhya Labs are building India-designed chips from scratch. For engineers with VLSI skills, this translates to sustained hiring across the stack — from RTL to signoff.
RTL Design Engineer — Write synthesisable Verilog or SystemVerilog to implement digital logic for CPUs, DSPs, memory controllers, and SoCs. Entry-level roles are plentiful; senior engineers own full IP blocks.
Verification Engineer — Build UVM testbenches, develop functional coverage models, and run formal verification flows to catch bugs before tapeout. Increasingly in demand as design complexity grows.
Physical Design Engineer — Take a synthesised netlist through floorplanning, place-and-route, timing closure, and signoff using tools like Cadence Innovus and Synopsys ICC2. Experience with advanced nodes (7nm and below) commands a premium.
DFT Engineer — Insert scan chains, BIST logic, and boundary scan structures to make chips testable after fabrication. A specialist role with consistent demand.
Analog / Mixed-Signal Designer — Design PLLs, ADCs, DACs, LDOs, and bandgap references in technologies from 65nm to 3nm. The smallest community, but the hardest to hire.
FPGA Engineer — Prototype designs on Xilinx or Intel FPGAs before tapeout, or build production FPGA-based systems for defence, space, and communications applications.
Most companies hire for deep tool expertise — Cadence Virtuoso, Xcelium, Synopsys VCS, PrimeTime — and a strong grasp of digital logic fundamentals. For verification roles, UVM methodology and coverage-driven verification skills are table stakes. Physical design roles require hands-on timing closure experience.
Freshers from IITs and NITs with VLSI specialisations are actively sought. Lateral hires typically need 2–8 years of domain experience, and senior roles (Staff/Principal Engineer) in SoC architecture or mixed-signal design are among the best-compensated engineering positions in India.
